China to extend passport renewals for 10 years

China has extended the passport renewal period for five years to allow more people to visit and work in the country, state media said Tuesday.
The Xinhua news agency reported that the extension was approved by the country’s National People’s Congress and was approved last month by China’s central government.
It said the extension applies to all citizens aged 18 or older and was to allow for people from the U.S. and Canada to renew their passports for another five years.
China was one of the first countries to extend passports for the duration of the pandemic.
The number of people living abroad tripled from a year earlier.
It’s not clear how many people will be allowed to renew.
China’s passports are not valid for 12 months after expiry, meaning people can only renew once for each 12-month period.
